From Classic Literature to Pop Culture: The Endless Competition Between Women

Rebecca, Rivalries, and Rock & Roll

Elizabeth Taylor and Debbie Reynolds. Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie. Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber.

These are to name but a few of the famous women pitted against each other by the media. We love to read it, the media love to write it.

I wrote my latest song “millie and sadie” after hearing someone compare two female actors who I adore, declaring that one was a better actor than the other.

The irritation it aroused in me meant that when I got home later that day, I sat down and wrote a song from the perspective of a stalker, pitting two women against each other for his own entertainment and empowerment. I imagined this stalker as a small boy, binoculars in hand, watching the two girls playing hopscotch on the street maniacally laughing while plotting his next move to tear their egos down. A stereotype perhaps, but that’s what I wrote.

Those actors were equal in the their skill. It was yet another example of what we do all the time in society. Tear down a woman by comparing her to another woman we deem to be more like us.

Now here’s another name for you:

Rebecca.

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier is one of my favourite books but it was only while musing over this topic that it dawned on me. Rebecca exists on the very idea that two women are held in comparison while competing for a man's attention.

And one of those two women is actually DEAD! Alas alack the grave itself cannot save us!

All this said, despite it’s dark undertones “millie and sadie” is a fun, upbeat, retro inspired rock pop song. It was a blast to write and record.

I hope you enjoy it. I would recommend playing it loudly in your car on a sunny drive.

love Jay

I've wanted to release a live album for a very long time. It may not seem a big deal, but actually, especially for an independent artist, catching the right performance on the right night with the right sound engineer is much harder than you think. That's why I'm so pleased to tell you that I'm finally putting out my first live album! "Jay Moussa-Mann Live from Toft House" was recorded at the start of year while supporting Steve McCormick + Tokyo Rose by the brilliant Chris Allon at Toft...

Special Anniversary Edition Digital Album, with 6 new tracks! Click here to get it only on Bandcamp A year ago today I released an album I never thought I would be able to make. It might not seem like a scary thing to you, to write and record pop songs, but for me it was a huge step because it marked the moment I broke away worrying about offending the people around me and started to say the things I wanted to say and be the person I really wanted to be. To celebrate this album's first...
